North Staffs Model Engineering Society

The Society was formed in 1936 when a group of like-minded people came together to share, exchange and develop knowledge and skills associated with the world of engineering in miniature. The Society is a local organisation that exists to demonstrate craftsmanship in making and operating objects that work and give pleasure. However, through national associations, there are links to model engineers all over the world.
The areas that interest the current membership, who come from all walks of life, include building and operating live steam and other railway engines, steam road vehicles such as traction engines and rollers. Also included are clocks, stationary steam engines such as those that powered industry in the past, model internal combustion engines and the making of tools to help in the home workshop.

Ipswich Model Engineering Society

IMES was founded in March 1945 and now has a healthy membership with a wide age span and varied engineering interests. It is an independent body with an annually elected committee, and is an associate member of the Southern Federation of Model Engineering societies.

The society’s clubhouse is located at 547 Foxhall Road (behind residential premises 543 and 545 Foxhall Road). Also located at this site is 350 foot continuous track for 3.5 inch and 5 inch guages.

The society meets every Tuesday evening between 7pm and 9pm in the clubhouse. This is an opportunity to meet other likeminded people interested in all aspects of model engineering. The club holds within its members a vast array of knowledge enabling experienced and inexperienced alike to share skills and information. Tuesday evening club night offers a chance to speak with other members in an informal atmosphere. The club also arranges informal ‘workshops’ where small groups can receive training in specialised subjects.

Hereford Society of Model Engineers

The society was started in Hereford in 1962, with the aim of building a miniature railway. The society has grown over the years and now has its own multi-purpose site at Broomy Hill, catering for all forms of model engineering.

All popular gauges of model locomotives are catered for with both a raised and a ground level track. Members enjoy regular working parties, twice-monthly meetings and a quarterly magazine

Situated adjacent to the Waterworks Museum, a visit to Broomy Hill on one of our “Public Running Days”, makes for an enjoyable day for all the family. There is plenty of space for parking (it’s free too) and pleasant surroundings to enjoy a picnic.

Crawley Model Engineers

The Crawley Model Engineers were founded in 1962 by a group of engineers working in one of the factories in Crawley.  Shortly after its formation, the Club approached the local Council for a site in Goffs Park on which to build a high level track.  Permission was granted and an ‘up and down’ track of about 750 feet was built.  Two years later an extended section was opened to give a complete circuit of 1250 feet.  This required two cuttings and help was given by the Council with a digger and a dumper truck.  The railway has continued to run since that date, the original railway sleeper bed being replaced with custom made girders.  The aluminium track has a ruling grade of about 1 in 100 with two short sections of 1 in 80.
